Hi,

Yes, the system being backed up is over a broadband connection...fiber
actually. The system has a static IP address. The "interval" if you will,
seems to be completely random.

Do you have access to the remote machine ? Can you get at the logs on the client box to see any relevant errors ?

Have you tried sniffing the link via tcpdump/ethereal ...etc to get a look at the net level while this is happening ?

I'd be interested at what you find/see, as I am proposing to use backuppc to backup a web server we want to deploy here. It will be in a similar topology as yours.

regards
Darryl

I am not sure if this is relevant in your case, but the last line of your post reminded me of a problem I had at one point.

You mention below that you will have to contact their ISP - is the PC you are backing up remote over a broadband connection? Does the client PC or their router get its' IP address from the ISP's DHCP server? What is the interval the ISP drops the connection and hands out a new IP address?

I hate to reply to my own post, but I found another bit of useful information while doing more troubleshooting.

During the backup run, Rsyncd + Cygrunsrv on the client

occupies it's
standard 100% CPU on one of the processors in the system.

Kernel time
is understandably high, given the disk I/O that's involved.

After the
backup hangs, from the servers perspective, and the dump

thread exits,
CPU usage on the client continues as if the backup was

still running.

I guess this further points to network problems. I guess

I'll have to
contact their ISP.
