Have you tried sending mail from the box with the 'mail' program?
$ mail -s '<subject>' <user@xxxxxxxxxx>
<type your message>
<control-d to finish message>

Beyond that bit of troubleshooting, I'm wondering about it myself. :)

Craig, what's the syntax for the BackupPC_sendEmail program, so we can try
invoking that on the command line? (and could you give it a 'usage' output
if someone types  BackupPC_sendEmail --help|-h|-? ?)
