Interesting... however I haven't tried it from a knoppix CD... I have an
emergency disk I've created myself that performs the task well on both Redhat
and Debian machines (Haven't tried fedora)

Come to think of it, I'm not sure why you'd be having the chroot problems. I
just run:

chroot /targetdir /bin/bash

and I'm in as root... You might have to mount /proc once you're in to get some
things to work as expected.

If the disk layout is the same then lilo or grub will perform the task
properly. If not, just edit their config files and way you go. Again, I
haven't used fedora but the chroot method should work with all distributions.
In my opinion using X is an overkill for rescue operations, if you have
multiple tty's then you can do more than one thing at a time... also the
rescue cd I use is only 5Mb, knoppix is a full cd. I don't need all the
applications in knoppix to do a rescue.

Once you do a chroot all the details for the machine is at your fingertips, so
starting network etc once you've chroot'd is as simple as
running /etc/init.d/network start or whatever your init.d script is. If the
kernel running is similar or the same as the machine you're restoring you
should also be able to start services, and even X in the chroot'd
environment.

Regards,
Josh.
