These folks make a hardware GZIP compression card, but only in PCI-X format.
Most people don't have PCI-X capable backup servers, I'm assuming :-)

Would people be interested in trying to get them to produce a PCI version?
Their PCI-X version will realtime gzip a 2Gbit stream; a PCI version
wouldn't need to support anything near that to be super useful.

..an alternative would be to hack backuppc to use lzop compression, which is
less CPU
intensive as well, or tweak backuppc to only use gzip -1 compression I
suppose...
...but yes, a hardware gzip card would be nice :-)
