config.status & distcheck

I find that if I take a built directory tree which has already passed 
'make check', normally passes 'make distcheck' with flying colors, and 
then do './config.status; make distcheck', make distcheck fails due to 
the distribution files being left behind in the test directory.

This is with Automake 1.9.
