Yeah, should be able to, but couldn't. It looks like something got screwed up 
in the unzip/untar process, as starting over with a fresh unzip/untar in to a 
new directory, then doing a ./configure and a make seems to have worked fine.

Thanks for your help. Sorry for bugging you with what turned out to be a 
stupid problem.
