I maybe oversimplifying it ..but to confirm my understanding

After successful authentication happens - a set of keys are shared
between client wifi card and the AP. These key(s) are then part of
all subsequent packets. Unless keys match, AP will not allow packets
to go through.

In WPA/WPA2, EAP authentication leads to a key hierarchy setup on client
and AP. Theses keys will be used for encryption and
authentication/integrity checks. Thus, if you're not authenticated, you
don't have the right key set and you can't build frames properly.
