ok! this was it. I had to deal with another tricky bug. Your default IP 
in the gui is 127.0.0.1 . This forces the lib to connect through TCP and 
consequently fails in my case since by default on debian mysql listens
only to a unix socket. Changing the server to localhost will fix this 
and the client mysql library will connect through the unix socket.
