Strange characters in terminal

I have my m0n0wall up and running but would like
to test connecting to it via terminal. I have connected
a serial cable from port on my wrap to my pc (com1).
Started Hyperterminal and added a new connection on
com1. When I boot the wrap, strange characters appairs
in hyperterminal. What might be the solution? Sorry if
this is a newbie question..
