Christina, I suppose a simple solution is to transform ae -> a-umlaut etc before the indexing takes place. Otherwise I think I can make a variant of the stemming algorithm that does what you want: I will try and put something together in the next couple of days. After that, it would be a matter of replacing modules inside OpenFTS, and no doubt you could do that or get help in having it done. Martin
