I disagree (and really don't see very well what you
mean by brain-dead part).

On first consideration, I think it would be a good
feature to open external links in a new window (not
inter-wiki links, which are -hint- still very painful
to use since they are right now external links)

And many mice have only one button, plus it is very
unnatural for a regular user to do a crtl something
to open a new window.
And in any case, opening a new window helps not losing
a visitor. When he done exploring the external area,
he can easily find his way back to wikipedia :-)

and yes, if only, that might be an option in the
prefs.
