Post-doc and PhD positions in Tilburg: msg#00087science.linguistics.corpora
PhD and postdoc positions in memory-based language modeling and machine translation in Tilburg http://ilk.uvt.nl/jobs/ilk2006-vici/ The Induction of Linguistic Knowledge (ILK) research group of Tilburg University's Department of Language and Information Science (Faculty of Arts) has openings for a full-time PhD student (four years) and a full-time postdoc researcher (three years). The two positions, funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), are part of the NWO VICI project "Implicit linguistics: Machine learning of text-to-text processing", with project leader Antal van den Bosch, focusing on memory-based language modeling and machine translation. Memory-based language modeling is a classification-based take on the classical problem of predicting the next or the missing word in a sequence, and has applications ranging from spelling correction to language modeling for speech recognition and machine translation. Memory-based machine translation, analogously, is a new classification-based implementation of example- based machine translation. Underlying both goals is the development of highly scalable memory-based classifiers (based on the TiMBL class of algorithms developed at Tilburg University) trained on very large monolingual and bilingual textual corpora. We are looking for enthusiastic and competent researchers to enrich the current ILK research group, which since its inception in the early 1990s has focused on machine learning applications in natural language processing, and to complete the five-person team for this particular project, which also consists of two scientific programmers and the project leader. Profile PhD student For the PhD position, we are looking for an academically oriented person with an MSc (or equivalent) in computer science, natural language processing, or artificial intelligence. Familiarity with machine learning and natural language processing is an advantage, as is a proficiency in written and spoken English. Programming skills (C (++), Perl, Python, or Java) are a pro. Profile Post-doc researcher For the postdoc, we are looking for a researcher with a PhD in computational linguistics, computer science, or a related area, preferably with a proven record in machine learning of natural language, or in data-driven methods for machine translation. The project calls for an all-round team player who knows how to do fundamental research, and who enjoys creating natural language processing software. Application and more information Applications should include cover letter, CV, and names of two references. Application letters should be sent before the application deadline of June, 21, 2006, by regular mail to mr. P. van Balen, Human Resources, Faculty of Arts, Room Y302, Tilburg University, P.O. Box 90153, NL-5000 LE Tilburg, The Netherlands, or by email to solliciterenFDL@xxxxxxx In your letter, please refer to vacancy code 810.06.04 for the PhD position or 810.06.05 for the postdoc researcher position. More detailed information on salary and other terms of employment can be found on http://ilk.uvt.nl/jobs/ ilk2006-vici/ .
