[Global Change: 363] Re: NY Times: geoengineering to combat global warming: msg#00039science.general.global-change
The route from asteroid belt to L1 need not be straight and only affected by the sun's gravity. I image at least a couple of planet fly bys' before it could be put in some chaotic orbit that would eventually lead to slowly approaching the L1 point. If we plan to flatten the asteroid, I expect we could cut small bits off and catapult them rapidly away in carefully planned directions at strategic moments. What weight would you need to tether together a series of satellites and have sufficient power from PV cells to provide the power to control the system? I am certainly not an expert at orbital mechanics and it might not be remotely plausible. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Global Change ("globalchange") newsgroup.
