The route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - returned SIOCADDRT: File exists.

Sounds to me like it's a routing problem.

What does "route" return?

if there isn't a default gateway (something I've noticed happens often on
my RH 7.1 laptop) try adding the following command:

route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

(where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the ip address of your gateway).
