Hi David
I bought a USB to serial adapter on ebay -- it was a few bucks.
My latest notebook also has no serial ports. This adapter is a no-name, but
it's more than just a connector adapter. Consists of a cable with a USB
plug on one end and an expanded serial 9-pin on the other with status LED's
in it. It comes with a mini-CD with the drivers.
The cable might be long enough - 3 feet -- to connect directly to the
PCR-1000, however, it has the nuts staked into it, so won't clear. It's
intended to attach another 9-pin plug into it and secure with the
thumbscrews. So, I mated it up to the original serial cable and that
worked. I assigned it to COM1. It might default to COM 5 or 6, and I don't
think that worked.
If you search on "USB to serial" on ebay you'll find lots of them. Should
also be available at local stores.
Barry

Re: connecting via usb
Hi David,
I'm presently using the Radio Shack USB/RS232 converter -- it works fine.
I've also used the Buxcomm http://www.buxcomm.com/Special_Connectors.htm
USB/RS232 interface with good results -- and these are cheaper. The only
problem that I've had with either of these is you must set them up for a com
port lower then 8. The Icom software won't recognize com ports 8 and above.
The Win XP device manager does allow you to force the com port number but
the procedure is a little convoluted.
Let me know if I can help any further.
