Subject: Re: Improve your HF reception with the LOWE PR-150 Pre-Selector

Hi,

I agree with the comments re preselectors.

Since the PCR-1000 is primarily a scanning receiver rather than a
fixed station receiver, it uses switched wideband front ends which
are prone to overload by signals in their (very wide) passband.
Adding a preselector or even a simple PI or T type aerial (antenna
for the Yanks) matcher makes for a big improvement becuse it reduces
the level of offending signals in the broadband preamp.

Its easy to make such a matcher.. sometimes inaccurately called
a 'tuner' from a couple of old domestic radio tuning capacitors and a
home made coil.

My usual station receivers are the Racal RA1772, RA117 or Yaesu
FR101, all of which have good preselectors. The downside (should you
see it that way) of preselectors is of course that you are
continually tweaking them for the best performance. It's rather
a 'mechanical' process.. tune, tweak, tune, tweak!
Obviously not something you could build into a scanning receiver.
A clear case of 'horses for courses', but having said that, the PCR-
1000 along with a matcher or preselector DOES make a very acceptable
receiver. A CW filter would have been nice though!

Kind Regards,

Al.
