Data Cable

Hi People

I am new to the group, just bought me a pcr1000, and i was wondering
if the serial port cable has built in interface or is it  straight 
wired ?, i use the pcr on both my main pc and my laptop, and don't 
want to keep unplugging that lead. Thanks in advance for any input
