Hi, Simone,
If I understand correctly, Ms. Nu has a thyroid problem, high blood
pressure, and mild kidney disease?
I am just a layperson, but here are my thoughts -
With my older cats, howling was not unusual. My old vet said that is
something older cats sometimes just do, although it is also apparently
sometimes associated with thyroid issues. I see my cat sleep a lot,
since he mainly does it on my lap, and significant twitching is not
unusual, it's part of dreaming. I know how easy it is to focus on
everything when things seem questionable, but I would not leap to the
brain disease conclusion, because those two symptoms sound to me to be
normal older cat things.
A vet opthamologist might be able to say something useful without
putting her thru any invasive tests. You might call one and discuss
what they could find out given her symptoms without stressing her.
The combination of mild kidney disease, drinking a lot of water, and
constipation makes me wonder if she is dehydrated. Is she getting
Lactated Ringers? That can really make a cat feel much better if
dehydration is a problem.
If she had pancreatitis, that would probably show up on a TLI/PLI
blood test, which is not a usual test, so you might ask for it. If
that comes back positive, things like B-12 injections and pancreatic
enzymes may be appropriate. It used to be thought that steroids were
bad for pancreatitis, but I think the feeling is now that they may help.
I had a lot of luck with Periactin (cyprohepatine) as an appetite
stimulant for my cat. He has been on it for about three and half
months, and its effect may be wearing off. If you try this, start
with a low dose. My cat is on 1/16 tablet twice a day. The normal 1/2
tablet was way too much for him and wigged him out.
