Barbara,
It seems that you are experiencing a mixed from what I lived with my angel
Clyde and with my Plug.
Clyde had pancreatitis and maybe it was because of the lymphoma. He also had
fluids in his belly and the last ultrassound showed the cancer had spread for
other organs. When I heard it I decided to put him to sleep, he had suffered
more than enough. I do regreat about other decisions I made about him (to keep
going with a strong protocol and to place a feeding tube to continue with this)
but at the point it was the only thing I could have done.
Plug also had pancreatitis unreleated to lymphoma. It was very severe and my
vet told he wouldn't make it. We also thougth he wouldn't make it. He was so
ill, so sick, so awful that I have made a decision to put him to sleep. Then my
husband told me to wait until the next day (to wait his vet on Monday) and he
showed some signs that let us in doubt. Also my vet offered one last shot and
we decided to try and he started improving. Nobody believes on it.
His vet told me that even if he recovered from pancreatitis he wouldn't live
two monts and we are almost there.
Plug stayed at hospital for 6 days, he receiveid parenteral nutrition, pain
medications (for 15 days), metronidazole, ranitidine cloridrate, ondosentrone
cloridrate and I hand fed him for about 15 days after he left the hospital. He
had an awful diarrhea and lost all the furr around his tail.
I don't know what is the best for your cat but I think if the cancer has spread
it may be very difficult to do something for him. If his main problem is the
pancratitis (wich also is a deadly disease) and he is not vomiting I think you
can make it. The main point is to find it out. When Plug got sick, the
ultrassound didn't showed anything and his vet treat him because of his
symptoms. But she also thougth his lymphoma could be in the bone marrow. God,
he was really close to death.
It is a tough decision and I may have to face it again very soon.
My best wishes for you both. I hope you have peace to chose the best way to
follow.

Barbara,
I feel just awful for you. I wish Erica was available, because she
was thinking of putting Plug to sleep because he was doing so bad and
also had pancreatitis that kept them from treating the lymphoma for a
time. Anyway, Plug pulled through and she says she can't believe she
was thinking of euthanasia. Maybe do a search for Plug on this site.
I don't know what fluid with lymphoma cells in the abdomen signifies.
Does it necessarily mean the cancer is active? Lymphocytes
accumulate where there is chronic injury or irritation. Maybe they
are present because of the pancreatitis.
I also know that pancreatitis is one of the most painful ailments to
suffer(at least in humans). But, it is usually temporary.
I don't want to give you false hope, but I don't want you to give up
too soon if it is something that will resolve itself with treatment.
I would try to make sure Muffin is made as comfortable as possible.
I am so sorry about your birthday.
It has just been a horrible period for cats.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and Muffin.
