RE: periactin (cyproheptadine) question: msg#00654

Subject: RE: periactin (cyproheptadine) question
When you called the vet Wednesday, did you tell them the question? Surely
someone should have been able to get back to you by now. I would be calling
again, although now that it is Saturday, it may be harder to reach someone.

I?m sorry to say that I have no experience with periactin and don?t know if
it needs to be tapered off.

When you call back, ask to speak to any vet who can answer your question,
and tell them it is important as you don?t want to stop a medicine and cause
a serious setback for your cat. You really need their advice on this.

I hope someone else with experience with this drug can give you some ideas,
too.

Hugs,

Subject: [feline_lymphoma] periactin (cyproheptadine) question

* Periactin (cyproheptadine) did wonders for my guy's appetite He's
been on it since the beginning of October.

However, it seems to be losing its effect.

Originally, what happened was, although the vet said 1/2 tablet, that
made him very hyper, and I went down to 1/16 tablet twice a day. That
worked well. When he occasionally had his weight drop, I'd give him
1/8 tablet once, which made him just slightly hyper and ravenous.

Even then, if I went to 1/8 tablet twice in a row, he'd get very
sleepy. I am puzzled as to how this happens with the hyperness, but
there is it.

Lately, the 1/16 tablet is not enough to perk up his appetite, he just
either nibbles, or goes hours without any interest in food. 1/8
tablet once did almost nothing, and twice in a row made him sleep
almost all the time, he really coulld hardly keep his eyes open.

Anyone had this happen and have any suggestions? I think I read
awhile ago that someone posted that Periactin had stopped working for
her cat and her vet said to discontinue it for awhile and then restart
it. If that's the case, does it need to be tapered off to avoid
withdrawal symptoms, and how long does it need to be discontinued>

I left a message on Wednesday for the vet who prescribed it, but
haven't heard back from her.

Thanks a lot.
