Lori--I'm sorry about Katie, but glad you got her to the vet. I don't know how
to answer your questions about what to look for re: low WBC count. On our
felinelymphomacaregivers.org web site it says: "White blood cells - Help
protect the body from infection and disease measured is thousands/microliter.
Normal range for a cat is 5.5-19.5" so by that Katie is just at the edge of
being low, although the lab results vary with who does them and the 'normals'
vary also.I think with low WBC you have to watch out for infection, so I'd
think you'd want to make sure Katie doesn't get chilled or come into contact
with other animals or humans who might track animal 'stuff' into your house.
Now--is there anything you can do to improve her WBC count? Hasn't someone on
the list talked about Neulasta? It's a drug for humans (at least) that reduces
the risk of infection. Here is a quote: When a patient has a low white blood
count, or if the patient's doctor expects this to occur after chemo, the
patient is often started on Neupogen (GCSF) or Leukine (GMCSF) shots, which
stimulate cells in the bone marrow to produce more white blood cells. These
drugs are generally given for several days in a row at the nadir. from

take it easy, take a rest with little Katie. I hope you can ask your vet about
some resources to protect Katie, but it really sounds like her WBC not low yet.
Peace, Cyndee

Subject: [feline_lymphoma] Concerned about Katie's last blood results and vet
visit
After all the cats with anemia these days I scared myself into making
a vet appt for Katie even though she's been fine. I started reading
and simone had mentioned feeling guilty about it being 6 weeks since
her last cbc. Katie hadn't been in for 3 months so then I started
feeling guilty.
The vet felt her intestines and said that the cancer has progressed
since she had her biopsy. She said there was no lymph node
involvment at that time but there definately is now. For obvious
reasons that has me concerned as Katie has been acting so happy I
thought she was in remission. I don't know if all the progression
happened in the time it took me to get her on Leukeran and the time
it took to work. Maybe now it's stopped? Hard to say. i asked if
maybe we should be more aggressive with the Leukeran. Then her CBC
results came back and her WBC was 5.5. My vet said that doesn't
really concern her all that much but if it gets any lower than that
she would be worried. She wants us to come back in a month to see
where it's at.
That # has me very concerned. I'm going to be upset if we have to
stop the leukeran especially since the cancer seems to be spreading
anyway.
Is a month to long to wait for a re-check? What signs should I be
looking for in low wbc?
Thanks!
Hugs,
Lori
