RE: cell phones out in the booners: msg#00877recreation.cars.toyota.campers
Unfortunately all old 3 watt phones (bag phones) are analog phones. The service providers want users to use digital phones. They tell customers it is to provide more services. (Caller id, call waiting, text mess. and others)The truth of the matter is digital service can handle much more call volume in a cell sight than analog. Most analog phones will work in most areas but the phone company's policy is to reduce analog service as much as possible. Digital phones use much less power thus improving battery life. A digital phone only transmits or checks in a cell sight once and stands buy until a call is directed to it. An analog phone is constantly transmitting it location to the cell sight to receive calls. There are other factors such as reduced power to transmit sound because digital phones only sample a sound wave and transmit the info using less power and so on. Cell sights are much closer now in pop. areas and the reduced power phones work ok for most customers. What I would suggest is to hang on to your old 3 watt bag phone for emergencies. Most people don't know that if you dial 911 (or the emergency number for your area) this call is mandated by the FCC to be a free call and carriers are required to direct this call to the emergency services. They don't spend the time and money to verify billing info. What that means to us is you can use any phone that has had service before (even if it currently doesn't have a service contract from a provider as long as it was programmed correctly at one time) will make a "911" call. Some service providers will even let you make a credit card calls to any number but be ready for some high costs. What I do is keep a 3 watt bag phone at home and in my toy to use for emergencies and have my regular phone for calls. Just remember that 911 services may not be able to call you back if you get disconnected or know who you are by billing info. Remember to identify yourself and your location first. Because a 3 watt phone transmits and receives so much farther they may have more of a problem finding you by your signal or what cell location you are using. I have in the past set up equipment to remote areas for customers using directional antennas and you would be surprised how far you can get service. You can test a phone to see if it can make a 911 call by dialing 911 and when emergency services answers, don't hang up when they answer because they will think it is a dropped emergency call and start looking for you. Just tell them you tried to call 611 (service info number) and must have made a misdial. Of course you shouldn't do this too much and tie up the lines. I hope this helped and if there is anything I can help you with drop a note. Ps . Dutch , drop me a note I Tried emailing you directly but had a prob.
