Re: New Owner: 4700 miles at 14.7 mpg
How do you calibrate the speedometer? Mine is off too!

We very recently purchased a 1990 Odyssey V-6 consigned at a local RV dealer. We were getting really tired of the rain in the Pacific NW
and needed a break. 10 days after taking it home we left for a trip South. We ended up taking 37 days and traveling 4700 miles, much of it in the Arizona/California Desert. We are not new to RVing, having
spent almost 3 years full-timing in a 1984 Bluebird Wanderlodge. We were new to the concept of a really small motorhome and not pulling a car behind us.The only changes we made before taking off were replacing the crappy
seats with a pair from a 1989 Camray and changing out the radio. We calibrated the odometer the first day (it was 5% slow). We ended up averaging 14.72 mpg, with individual tanks ranging from 12.43 to 17.75
mpg. We got the best milage going downhill (surprise!) and the worst on rolling hills where we had to downshift into 2nd constantly. We cruised at 55 and occasionally upping it to 60 thru cities. We only passed one car during the entire trip, and I think
he was lostWe had no problems other than the fridge stopping working on gas half way thru. I found a loose wire on the fuse block when we got home. We found that it kept its temperature quite well being off during the
day as long as we could plug it in at night.Unlike with our Bluebird, we found that mountains were a non-problem. Yeah, we would slow to 45 on the 6-7% upgrades, but nothing like our 43,000 lb bus did. Engine braking on the downgrades was
much better than the Jake brake on our diesel. I was able to make a U-turn on a small flooded dirt road where our Bluebird would have had to back up for miles. We ended up preferring the secondary roads to
the interstates, the reverse of our previous experience. In short we loved it. We will be taking off again as soon as we sell the Bluebird. We could not have afforded to fill the 300 gal tank on the Bluebird (6 mpg), but the 18 gal tank on the Toyota was no
problem.Gerry McGowan
