Dave,
        minor request (I hope): I've tried to put in my .i something like:

#if SWIG_VERSION < 0x010317
#error SWIG version 1.3.17 or later required
#endif

But the #error directive seems to be silently ignored. Of course I can use 
%warn instead, but I'd rather have SWIG stop than continue and issue a 
series of other warnings among which the relevant one might be lost...
