I think there's a much clearer anology in the music
industry. Especially the British music industry.

A few years back they thought they had that winning
forumla in the form of boy/girl bands. They thought
that they could take any set of young hopefuls and
mold them into commercially viable pop stars. They
were so confident that they even made shows like Pop
Idol, promising stardom to the winners.

While this did lead to some short term profits, long
term the industry is in serious decline.

British artists used to dominate the American charts.
The few that remain are largely styles that have
been free from the shenanigans of corporate automation.
