Jim Long: >But, suggesting that a team "starts the refactoring early" >doesn't sound much different then the preemptive mental >refactorings that lead to the belief in story dependencies. I'm not Ron (obviously) and his answer may be different (probably), but my feeling about this is that its the difference between doing something unknowingly, and doing something conciously. Or for the pragmatic: It's the sort of thing described by the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition (Pragmatic Dave has a good blog on the topic here: http://pragprog.com/pragdave/Practices/ValueWorker.rdoc/style/print) Or for the more mystical: It follows the pattern: ignore the path, learn the path, follow the path, adapt the path, forget (ignore) the path. Or for the more artistic: Its the difference between being a novice painter and thus not following the rules, and an expert painter and thus not following the rules. Or for the skeptic: It's, all of course BullSh*t -- except that all project teams do seem to get to this point eventually when things are really working. :-) Best, Bill (Channelling Mike H.)
