One thing you might check is that the server box doesn't have a software firewall set up. I went through similar machinations trying to get some macs to see a printer I had connected to a GNU/Linux box and the default RedHat install was blocking connections on a bunch of ports needed by CUPS causing all kinds of problems. -Peter P.S.
