At least, somebody that has a similar problem...

My solution (Worked for me)
Grab the cups source, edit backend/usb.c, locate LPGETSTATUS and comment out 
the whole statement that checks the status. Recompile cups and install it.

Of course, this is not the ideal solution, since the problem seems to sit 
somewhere deeper.

Question to the developers: is it possible that different printers return 
different status flags?
