Catholic Church no longer swears by truth of the Bible

THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true. The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, th at they should not expect ?total accuracy? from the Bible. ?We should not expect to find in Scripture full scientific accuracy or complete historical precision,? they say in The Gift of Scripture. The document is timely, coming as it does amid the rise of the religious Right, in particular in the US. Some Christians want a literal interpretation of the story of creation, as told in Genesis, taught alongside Darwin?s theory of evolution in schools, believing ?intelligent design? to be an equally plausible theory of how the world began. But the first 11 chapters of Genesis, in which two different and at times conflicting stories of creation are told, are among those that this country?s Catholic bishops insist cannot be ?historical?. At most, they say, they may con tain ?historical traces?. The document shows how far the Catholic Church has come since the 17th century, when Galileo was condemned as a heretic for flouting a near-universal belief in the divine inspiration of the Bible by advocating the Copernican view of the solar system. Only a century ago, Pope Pius X condemned Modernist Catholic scholars who adapted historical-critical methods of analysing ancient literature to the Bible. In the document, the bishops acknowledge their debt to biblical scholars. They say the Bible must be approached in the knowledge that it is ?God?s word expressed in human language? and that proper acknowledgement should be given both to the word of God and its human dimensions. They say the Church must offer the gospel in ways ?appropriate to changing times, intelligible and attractive to our contemporaries?. The Bible is true in passages relating to human salvation, they say, but continue: ?We should not expect total accuracy from the Bible in other, secular matters.? They go on to condemn fundamentalism for its ?intransigent intolerance? and to warn of ?significant dangers? involved in a fundamentalist approach. ?Such an approach is dangerous, for example, when people of one nation or group see in the Bible a mandate for their own superiority, and even consider themselves permitted by the Bible to use violence against others.? Of the notorious anti-Jewish curse in Matthew 27:25, ?His blood be on us and on our children?, a passage used to justify centuries of anti-Semitism, the bishops say these and other words must never be used again as a pretext to treat Jewish people with contempt. Desc ribing this passage as an example of dramatic exaggeration, the bishops say they have had ?tragic consequences? in encouraging hatred and persecution. ?The attitudes and language of first-century quarrels between Jews and Jewish Christians should never again be emulated in relations between Jews and Christians.? As examples of passages not to be taken literally, the bishops cite the early chapters of Genesis, comparing them with early creation legends from other cultures, especially from the ancient East. The bishops say it is clear that the primary purpose of these chapters was to provide religious teaching and that they could not be described as historical writing. Similarly, they refute the apocalyptic prophecies of Revelation, the last book of the Christian Bible, in which the writer describes the work of the risen Jesus, the death of the Beast and the wedding feast of Christ the Lamb. The bishops say: ?Such symbolic language must be respected for what it is, and is not to be interpreted literally. We should not expect to discover in this book details about the end of the world, about how many will be saved and about when the end will come.? In their foreword to the teaching document, the two most senior Catholics of the land, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O?Connor, Archbishop of Westminster, and Cardinal Keith O?Brien, Archbishop of St Andrew?s and Edinburgh, explain its context. They say people today are searching for what is worthwhile, what has real value, what can be trusted and what is really true. The new teaching has been issued as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Dei Verbum, the Second Vatican Council document explaining the place of Scripture in revelation. In the past 40 years, Catholics have learnt more than ever before to cherish the Bible. ?We have rediscovered the Bible as a precious treasure, both ancient and ever new.? A Christian charity is sending a film about the Christmas story to every primary school in Britain after hearing of a young boy who asked his teacher why Mary and Joseph had named their baby after a swear word. The Breakout Trust raised £200,000 to make the 30-minute animated film, It?s a Boy. Steve Legg, head of the charity, said: ?There are over 12 million children in the UK and only 756,000 of them go to church regularly. That leaves a staggering number who are probably not receiving basic Christian teaching.? Haxhi Murati Te dashur miq, Assalamu aleikum Me ishte bere nje kohe e gjate qe nuk kisha lexuar ndonje liber qe te me prekte thelle. Por sonte ne darke sapo mbarova se lexuari librin e Leon Tolstoit, ?Haxhi Murati?. Romani ne fjale zhvillohet ne Kaukaz, 150 vite me pare, kur ruset nisen pushtimin e republikave muslimane si Dagestanin, Cecenine, Ballkarian, Ingushetian etj. Leon Tolstoi romanin Haxhi Murati ia dedikon njerit prej prijesve cecene te kesaj kohe i cili ne lufte e siper eshte bere armik i imam Shamilit, te cilin perkthyesit ne gjuhen shqipe e kane perkthyer si Qamil. Nuk e di nese kete pershtatje nga Shamil ne Qamil e ka bere Afrim Koci i cili ka bere shume gabime ne perkthimin e termave islame cecene, apo ndoshta Kadareja i cili ka bere edhe parathenien e librit. Por nese ka qene ky i fundit, mendoj se shnderrimin e emrit te imam Shamilit ne Qamil do e kete bere nga inati prej toske qe ky ka per revolten islamike te Gegerise nen Haxhi Qamilin nga viti 1913 deri ne 1915. Megjithate rrefimi i romanit vazhdon keshtu: I deshperuar dhe ne konflikt me Shamilin, Haxhi Murati arratiset ne anen e pushtuesve ruse, te cilet Leon Tolstoi i tregon ne detaj sesa muzhike, te korruptuar dhe prepotente jane. Nepermjet rrefimeve paralele sa ato te botes cecene aq edhe te asaj ruse, Tolstoi jep nje tablo te qarte te konfliktit cecen. Imperializmi rus ne Kaukaz i shkaktonte muslimaneve krenare vetem fatkeqesi. Per te mundesuar perunjen e Cecenise, ruset digjnin pyjet, fshatrat, vrisnin fshataret te cilet edhe nese do te ishin me paqesoret, pas kesaj hidheshin ne anen e Xhihadit te Imam Shamilit. Krimet e renda te ruseve i detyronin cecenet qe te rrokin armet dhe luftojne deri ne vdekje. Por ashtu si ne anen e ruseve, edhe ne ate cecene kishte shume mosmarreveshje. Tolstoi i cili per disa arsye te pakuptueshme per mua, apo ndoshta nga frika e regjimit carist, eshte munduar ta portretizoje Shamilin si nje njeri brutal dhe c?njerezor, Haxhi Muratin, komandantin dezertues cecen e portretizon si misherimin e te gjithe miresise. Haxhi Murati pasi eshte bindur ti bashkohet ghazavatit ? apo xhihadit kunder ruseve, pas disa mizorishe qe ata i kane shkaktuar atij personalisht, ne nje moment bie ne konflikt edhe me imamin e ceceneve, Shamilin, i cili, i bindur se Haxhi Murati kerkon ti marre postin nje dite, kerkon ta vrase. Per te shpetuar nga hakmarrja e imamit, Haxhi Murati dezerton prane armiqve te tij, ruseve te cilet i ka vrare ne sa e sa beteja. Lajmi i tradhetise se Haxhi Muratit pritet me te madhe ne Shen Peterburg dhe ruset mendojne se tashme Kaukazi do te nenshtrohet me lehte. Haxhi Murati ishte numri dy i rezistences cecene, dhe dezertimi i tij kupton shume. Ndersa qendron ne pranine e ruseve te degjeneruar, Haxhi Murati ndeshet me jeten vulgare te salloneve sllave, ndersa ankthi e bren per te liruar familjen e tij e cila mbahet peng nga Shamili. Prane Haxhi Muratit qendrojne gjithnje muridet e tij besnike, te cilet Tolstoi i portretizon me ngjyrat me te bukura qe malesori cecen mund te kete. Besimi i tyre i patundur ne Allah shihet edhe ne fjalorin e bukur qe ata permendin si gjate kohes kur jane ne hare me Haxhi Muratin por edhe ne kohen kur vdesin, ku te gjithe kendojne shehadetin ?La ilaha il Allah?. Por prane murideve dhe Haxhi Muratit shpesh shfaqen edhe shume personazhe terheqese rusesh, te cilet fale halleve te tyre ne jete, apo dhunes cariste jane detyruar te shkojne ne malet e egra te Kaukazit dhe perballen me nje popull malesor te pafaj. Kur ndonjeri prej tyre vdes, ne Rusi vdekja e tyre trajtohet si sherbim i larte ndaj Carit, Rusise dhe Ortodoksise, ndersa familjet e te vrareve i pllakos fatkeqesia. Fisnikeria dhe fetaria e Haxhi Muratit i prek shume ruset e thjeshte, te cilet edhe pse jane pjese e makines vrasese te Shen Peterburgut krijojne shume simpati per komandantin cecen. Gjate te gjithe kohes qe jeton ne kampin rus Haxhi Muratin e bren ndergjegja prej muslimani nese kjo gje qe po ben eshte e mire apo jo. Por i perballur me friken e c?nderimit te familjes dhe masakrimin e te birit nga Shamili, Haxhi Murati i kerkon ruseve ndihme dhe ofron te bashkepunoje me ata per ta cuar te gjithe Kaukazin kunder Shamilit, nese te fundit e ndihmojne per hallin e tij te madh. Megjithate qarqet zyrtare ruse, e shohin me dyshim Haxhi Muratin dhe nuk e permbushin kurre deshiren e tij. Kur kulmi i durimit te Haxhi Muratit sos kulmin, ai vendos te largohet nga ruset te cilet e mbanin gjithnje nen vezhgim dhe te shkoje e te ndeshet vete me imam Shamilin, per te cliruar familjen e tij apo edhe vdekur me nder nese eshte nevoja. Megjithate kur mundohet te largohet nga ruset, keta te fundit e rrethojne dhe e vrasin sebashku me muridet e tij. Edhe pse fundi i Haxhi Muratit eshte shume tragjik, me ate Leon Tolstoi ndoshta kerkon ti tregoje lexuesit fatin qe personat qe nuk i binden perandorive te medha kane. Ato te perdorin per sa kohe kane nevoje, dhe me pas, ne nje dite te bukur, te flakin tutje, dhe te harrojne pergjithnje. Romani Haxhi Murati per te cilin Leon Tolstoi rrefen ta kete ndertuar mbi fakte te verteta duhet te lexohet nga ata njerez qe duan te kuptojne historine e dhimbshme te popujve te Kaukazit ne perballjet e tyre me agresionin ruso ? ortodoks te ketyre 200 viteve te fundit. Romani eshte aktual edhe per te kuptuar luften e sotme te popullit cecen, por edhe atij iraken te cilet perballen me agresionin rus dhe anglo-amerikan ne Lindjen e Mesme.
