"It is not anti-Semitic to criticize the policies of the state of Israel." -- Colin Powell
According to Undersecretary of State John Bolton, "[T]he United States strongly believes that Iran has a clandestine program to produce nuclear weapons and has been warning publicly about Tehran's weapons ambitions for over a decade." Now, having nuke ambitions is one thing. Having the "fissile" material ? plutonium-239 or uranium-235 ? needed to produce nukes is quite another.
Okay, one more time.
There were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Iraq WAS in compliance with UN Resolutions. Iraq was NOT a threat to the United States. Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11. Iraq was not supporting Al Qaeda. Iraq did not gas the Kurds, Iran did. Saddam is in jail. The Iraqi people do not want Americans occupying their country. The US has already lost this war politically, in the eyes of the world. There is nothing they can do which will be seen as vindicating the presence of the US in Iraq.
I know that tower from my days in Los Angeles (actually down in Buena Park). It's clearly marked, and sits in open ground. There are no obstructions anywhere around it.
A massive US ground offensive on Fallujah yesterday has ended in humiliating defeat for the Americans. While dust storms disabled US airpower, matters were further complicated when Allawi troops fled the battleground after 15 minutes of fighting and Mujahideen launched devastating attacks under the cover of poor visibility.
Yeah, I noticed that ABCNNBCBS doesn't seem to want to talk much about Fallujah (or Mosul) today.
Presidents get into trouble in their second terms, especially when they interpret reelection as a huge mandate. The details differ, but most of them involve overreaching.
The giant grinding sound you hear is Chinese factories, now consuming more than a quarter of the world's steel, producing more steel than the United States and Japan combined, manufacturing more of everything than any other nation. Indeed, China has doubled its share of world manufacturing exports in the last decade. And the giant gushing sound you hear is Chinese financial capital, buying up whatever it needs all over Southeast Asia, and even propping up the dollar.
After a seven-year decline, the number of Americans on food stamps has shot up 39 percent since 2000, according to federal statistics. Every state, except Hawaii, has felt the impact. In Arizona, food stamp rolls have increased 104 percent, in Nevada, 97 percent; Oregon, 79 percent; South Carolina, 68 percent; Missouri, 65 percent.
President Bush had a whimsical, fanciful, magical notion -- hold a two-day White House conference on the economy in which nobody said a negative word.
Read this carefully. The White House holds a conference on the economy, but the only people allowed to attend are budding "yes men" on internships, standing around and nodding at each other saying, "Oh yes, it was just a small iceberg that grazed the bow, and we can all go back and sleep in our warm cabins."
FOUR YEARS ago, the commission on Social Security that Richard Parsons was co-chairing for President Bush warned with a bit too much hype that "the promise of Social Security to future retirees cannot be met without eventual resort to benefit cuts, tax increases, or massive borrowing."
I said the same thing 8 years ago.
The Halabja atrocity remains murky. The CIA's former Iraq desk chief claims Kurds who died at Halabja were killed by cyanide gas, not nerve gas, as is generally believed. At the time, Iraq and Iran were locked in the ferocious last battles of their eight-year war. Halabja was caught between the two armies that were exchanging salvos of regular and chemical munitions. Only Iran had cyanide gas. If the CIA official is correct, the Kurds were accidentally killed by Iran, not Iraq.

Iran said Sunday its intelligence services have uncovered a spy ring that collected intelligence information for Israel, according to a report by Israel Radio's Persian language program.
Is the delicate balance that has kept the global economy going despite jaw-dropping U.S. debts about to give way? A growing number of economists think so.
Cheap price to pay to steal an election.
Tony Blair was savaged over his commitment to new freedom of information laws yesterday as it emerged that civil servants are being ordered to destroy millions of emails less than a fortnight before they will become publicly accessible.
During the 1970's, the apartheid government of South Africa sought to bolster its claims to legitimacy by allowing elections in the Bantustans - the equivalent to today's walled in Palestinian communities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The thought was that if people elected local officials, even to hold largely ceremonial offices, then the rest of the world would stop whining about how undemocratic and illegal apartheid was.
The Government's refusal to withdraw its anti-terror laws has left Britain on the brink of a constitutional crisis that threatens centuries of hard-won civil liberties, it was claimed last night.
The US Army had suffered heavy casualities from attacks by resistance and apart from army bases, it had no control over the rest of Iraq, a representative of the Al-Sadr militia said here today.
And JUST as he was about to go on trial and tell the world how the US helped him become dictator of Chile all those years ago, too!
It would be nice if someone forgave OUR debts, especially the ones incurred without our permission.
In a week that will decide the future of some of Britain's biggest high street chains, shoppers have left present-buying so late that retail analysts are split over Christmas, the year's most crucial trading period.
Why are lower income consumers suffering? Gas prices and home heating costs are up 30 percent from last year, Regan points out, taking $1 billion from Americans' pocketbooks every week. And with interest rates at their highest level in three years, consumers are feeling the pinch.
American Express said it will cut 2,000 jobs, or 2.5 per cent of its work force, in a restructuring designed to save more than $75 million a year before taxes.
The Intelligence Reform legislation is 615 pages long. Not one was written by either a Senator or a Congressman. This entire campaign to strip Americans of their civil liberties is being orchestrated by private interests; the "silent partners" who wrote this legislation in its entirety. Think about that.
The enemies of this nation are not outside, but buried deep within the government itself.
"Saddam's coming to getcha!. What? In jail? Umm, okay, Osama's coming to getcha!. No kidding! Dead? Wow. OKay, then Zarqawi is ocming to getcha! Dead too, huh? Alright, I'll back to you later on who you're supposed to be terrified of, so meanwhile just hang on to a non-specific fear and free-floating anxiety."
The author of a UN report on freedom and governance in the Arab world says the United States is threatening to cut aid should the report be published.
A well-respected and popular professor at the University of California in Berkeley has been fired after publishing a scientific paper regarding the uncontrolled contamination of irreplaceable native Mexican corn varieties by genetically engineered corn. Dr. Ignacio Chapela, whose corn contamination article was published in the science journal "Nature," was denied his tenure due to pressure from the biotech company Monsanto on the University.
This is the latest propaganda ploy to trick you into living with less so that the government can have more. The US Government has borrowed itself into a huge hole it cannot get out of without doubling your taxes. But no American will tolerate paying more taxes to repay loans they never agreed to in the first place. So, the government is going to blame the decline in living standards on an "attack" on the economy by bin Laden, in the hopes you'll be suckered into accepting poverty as your patriotic duty.
AMP Dollar Savings Inc. of Mesa, Ariz., was ordered to pay $720 million and Cash Link Systems Inc. of Miami, Fla., was ordered to pay $360 million. The third company, Florida-based TEI Marketing Group, was ordered to pay $140,000.

Well, that's one way to deal with vote-rigging.
In my local region, plants are shutting down, warehouses and factorys are closing altogether and/or streamlining and hundreds of people are losing jobs. I moved from one region that had a depressed economy and now reside in what?s considered an economically sound area and has been for many years, only to see the same things happening. While what I have seen is typical business, what I also see is affecting communities around the country and not in just one geographical area or type of business. In short, although Bush proclaims growth and a strengthening economy and the numbers from his administration reflect it, its not being felt where it helps or hurts most.
"Show some gratitude; I'm getting writer's cramp over here!"
Just two weeks after the September 11 attacks, a secret memo to White House counsel Alberto Gonzales? office concluded that President Bush had the power to deploy military force ?preemptively? against any terrorist groups or countries that supported them?regardless of whether they had any connection to the attacks on the World Trade Towers or the Pentagon.

The FT suggested the shift by OPEC was due to "private Middle East investors" who are "worried about the prospect of U.S.-held assets being frozen as part of the war on terror, leading to accelerated dollar-selling after the re-election of President George W. Bush."
Kelly Minio-Paluello (23), a journalist and community activist from the USA, was brutally arrested by Israeli Border Policemen while filming a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday outside Ramallah, in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
The administration of President George W Bush, after being ridiculed by Democrats for an overly optimistic jobs forecast this year, significantly reduced its forecast for new jobs that will be created in 2005.
Bush is Selling a Trojan Horse, Says Author of 'The Looting of Social Security' Posted Dec 18, 2004 02:28 PM PST Category: ECONOMY "President Bush is trying to sell his privatization proposal as a plan to save Social Security, when it is actually a clever scam designed to destroy the program that conservatives have hated since its enactment in 1935," says economist Allen W. Smith, Ph.D., author of the book, "The Looting of Social Security: How the Government is Draining America's Retirement Account."
I was surprised that few Ohioans I spoke with over my week there knew that the Secretary of State, in addition to being the constitutional officer in charge of the election, also served as co-chair of the Ohio campaign to elect Bush/Cheney, and as the spokesman for the state ballot initiative to ban gay marriage. This is the second time in two elections that the Secretary of State in the crucial battleground state has also served as Bush/Cheney campaign chair. In 2000, it was Katherine Harris, who now represents Florida?s 13th district in the US Congress. Word in Ohio is that Blackwell?s sights are even higher. He intends to run for governor of Ohio in two years, no doubt with significant help from the Bush machine.
Americans may still believe that they have a plucky little ally out there in the Middle East, who deserves their unwavering support, but the truth is that while with one hand Israel welcomes US support, with the other it picks its ally?s pockets.
?Neocons? in the Defense Department long ago urged an invasion of Iraq as a step toward U.S. control of the Middle East. Retired U.S. General Anthony Zinni, former chief of the U.S. Central Command, publicly stated recently that ?everyone? in Washington knows that oil and Israel are the real reasons for the war.
There's now physical evidence that depleted uranium, once in the body, migrates to the brain, lungs, bones and testicles of rats and mice. Researchers have found that even a single particle placed in contact with human bone cells can set off a chain reaction of cell and chromosomal abnormalities of the type thought to cause cancer.
"Isn't winning" = "losing".
After 9/11, nobody in the U.S. government (yes, NOBODY) has been fired for negligence, incompetence, or even to show that "business as usual" would not be tolerated any more. For a year, the Bush administration resisted even appointing a commission to investigate failures that went into the attacks, and did only when it was forced to by mounting public pressure led by families of 9/11 victims. And then, it denied the commission access to crucial information, underfunded it dramatically, tried to withhold witnesses, attempted to prevent an extension so that it could finish its investigation, and generally did everything possible to torpedo the commission.
"Evidence linking these Israelis to 9/11 is classified. I cannot tell you about evidence that has been gathered. It's classified information." -- US official quoted in Carl Cameron's Fox News report on the Israeli spy ring and its connections to 9-11.
Millions of e-mails to British government staff will be automatically wiped out on Monday, 11 days before freedom of information laws come into force, a newspaper reported Saturday.
Anomalies were found. Almost all of the witnesses that I spoke with felt that the ballots were not in random order, that they had been previously sorted. There would be long spurts of votes for only one candidate and then long spurts for another, which seemed statistically improbable to most. From what they were able to get through, witnesses found that signature counts were very much different from the official recorded number of ballots. At the time of the orientation, Jacqui Maiden stated that there will be no visual inspection of the remaining 600,000-some ballots in the county.
The 37 voters cite reports of machine errors, double-counting of some ballots and a shortage of voting machines in predominantly minority precincts as reasons to throw out the election results.

Under all conceivable civil and criminal laws, ?Forced Entry? into the property of others to steal, kill, destroy, reconfigure original border and layout structure to deface the truth of a culture or religion is generally considered illegal.
Piecing together the evidence coming in from the attempted Ohio Recount, my current Best Guess is that the machines used to count the votes on election night were rigged. Technicians came in later and removed the evidence, replacing the rigged boards with clean boards.
Sybil Arum's eighth-grade granddaughter came home this week worried that she was on the verge of being drafted by the military and sent off to war. The reason for her fear was the Department of Education's annual privacy notice, which says contact information for secondary students as young as sixth-graders may be released to military recruiters unless the student, parent or legal guardian requests otherwise.
The United States' foreign creditors hold an estimated $11 trillion in U.S. "paper," or 43 percent of the superpower's privately held national debt, up from 30 percent since George W. Bush became the 43rd president. China, Japan and Saudi Arabia are among the biggest dollar stakeholders, and they have seen their assets fall 35 percent against the euro and 24 percent against the yen.

The Bush administration formally canceled Iraq's $4.1 billion debt to the United States on Friday and urged others to do the same to help the country rebuild.
The generosity of the Bush administration knows no bounds. I wonder if they'll follow up by cancelling everyone in America's debts...

Keeping a Windows PC safe can demand a high degree of vigilance -- if cars needed the same constant care and feeding, the Beltway would revert to a country byway.

Palestinian textbooks contain incitement to hatred of Israel, right? Both President George W. Bush and President Bill Clinton have said so. Zionist groups constantly lobby European foreign ministries to stop support for Palestinian textbooks on that basis, and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon affirmed it at a recent Likud party meeting.
It turns out that the original allegations were based on Egyptian or Jordanian textbooks and incorrect translations. Time and again, independently of each other, researchers find no incitement to hatred in the Palestinian textbooks. .
Gunmen raked a car with machine-gun fire in the northern city of Mosul yesterday, killing three foreigners and their driver. They then cut off the head of one of their victims. The killings show that at the same time as the US was recapturing Fallujah in a heavily publicised assault it largely lost control of Mosul, Iraq's northern capital.
Bush will react by "Fallujah-ing" the place, with B-52s and Napalm.
This move may reveal that drastic population reduction is one of the goals of the new global wars. Any society can lose a large percentage of males in a war yet still be able to grow their population at pre-war levels (with the relaxation of certain social rules). But if the females start being killed in war, post-war birth rates are driven into decline.
I wonder just WHICH women are going to be designated as bullet-catchers?
Initial information springing up right after the 9/11 tragedy, including the behind-the-scenes reaction and some resulting policies of the Bush administration, indicated that the U.S. government was aware of Israeli prior knowledge of the attack, and considered Israel as a suspect in the masterminding of the conspiracy through an attempt to implicate Arabs, Muslims, and Osama bin Laden in the disaster, for the purpose of turning international opinion, which was mounting against Israel, instead against their Muslim enemies and force the U.S. and the U.N. to brand and consider Palestinian leader Yassir Arafat as a "terrorist" who should be included as an enemy in the subsequent "War on Terrorism" which resulted.
The Associated Press, National Public Radio, and The Washington Post each received subpoenas this week from the lawyer representing former U.S. Army researcher Steven Hatfill, who is suing the federal government under the Privacy Act for trying to link him to the 2001 anthrax attacks and leaking information about him. There are rumors circulating in several Washington bureaus of as many as a dozen other subpoenas.
Hatfill should subpoena the reporters from the Hartford Courant and have them testify in open court about the real suspect, caught entering the storage area where the Anthrax used in the letters was kept, without authorization, and after being fired over a racially motivated attack on an Egyptian co-worker, but strangely never investigated by the FBI. Then they should subpoena Dr. Barbara Rosenberg and ask her why she was cheer leading the focus away from that suspect and towards Dr. Hatfill.
The chilling reality of what Fallujah has become is only now seeping out, as the US military continues to block almost all access to the city, whether to reporters, its former residents, or aid groups such as the Red Crescent Society.
Meanwhile, Harirson Ford will star in the movie of how the US wants you to THINK Fallujah went!
The American Jewish Committee, (which by their own admission represents only 2.3percent of American Jews) would be far more effective from a Jewish perspective and more in keeping with the American Constitution, to invest their resources in supporting the public display of menorahs instead of fighting to keep G-d out of public schools and public life.
"But, but, but, the recruiters keep telling me it's just one big party over there!!!!"
Cobb, who ran an unsuccessful bid for president, is at the vanguard of the Ohio recount. The Green and Libertarian Parties raised tens of thousands of dollars to pay for the recount and put county observers on the ground. Meanwhile, Cobb observed, Kerry has not contributed ?a single dime.? ?John Kerry is trying to minimize and undermine and delegitmize the recount,? Cobb asserted.
We will simply not let the issue drop. How on earth can somebody have two different gunshot wounds and their cause of death still be passed off as suicide?
A week-long combined air and ground maneuver has just concluded in five of the southern and western provinces of Iran, mesmerizing foreign observers, who have described as "spectacular" the massive display of high-tech, mobile operations, including rapid-deployment forces relying on squadrons of helicopters, air lifts, missiles, as well as hundreds of tanks and tens of thousands of well-coordinated personnel using live munition. Simultaneously, some 25,000 volunteers have so far signed up at newly established draft centers for "suicide attacks" against any potential intruders in what is commonly termed "asymmetrical warfare".
Halliday said today: "The Oil for Food 'scandal' is not a scandal of the United Nations, but rather of the member states, particularly of Washington and London."
