Moderate Islam: a Reductio ad Absurdum

Among the polite lies we love to tell ourselves, few are repeated as often 
as "Islam is a religion of Peace." This view has mocked mercilessly, and 
rightfully so, but there is a related view, much harder to refute. It is 
this: "Moderate Islam does not lead to violence and discrimination." Let's 
look at it.

Suppose the War on Terrorism succeeds in destroying the so-called Islamic 
extremists. Al-Qaeda is hunted into oblivion. The Philippine and Thai 
Muslim insurgencies are defeated. The Gulf States begin moving towards 
Democracy, albeit slowly. After many Israeli concessions, a Palestinian 
State is created. India and Pakistan come to some sort of agreement over 
Kashmir. A tenuous peace agreement holds in Sudan. Moderate Islam, then, 
reigns supreme. Does peace and justice reign with it?

Under such moderate Islam, it would be likely that Muslim political 
leaders to abrogate any treaty that is no longer tactically advantageous, 
following the example set by Mohammad by breaking the treaty of 
Hudaybiyyah.

Under such moderate Islam, young non-Muslim girls would still be abducted, 
forcibly converted, and have their ovaries made into servants of the 
demographic Jihad.

Under such moderate Islam, racially Chinese Malaysians who convert--or 
"convert"--to Islam, would not have the right to leave their state to 
their family.

Under such moderate Islam, Muslim "Human Rights Advocates" would still 
want to take over their host societies. As Ibrahim Hooper, the spokesman 
for the Council on American-Islamic Relations said in a 1993 interview:

     I wouldn't want to create the impression that I wouldn't like the 
government of the United States to be Islamic sometime in the future," 
Hooper told the Star Tribune. "But I'm not going to do anything violent to 
promote that. I'm going to do it through education.

The English language is being seriously twisted here. When we speak of an 
individual being a moderate, we speak of somebody who is non-ideological 
and open to compromise. When we speak of a moderate institution, we refer 
to an institution that at least values compromise, dialogue, and peace. 
When it comes to Islam, however, any Muslim who is not ghoulishly 
murderous will be portrayed as a moderate. As Daniel Pipes concludes:

     For Western officialdom, a moderate is defined as a Muslim who 
publicly advocates against terrorism in the West.

     Nothing else matters: not advocating for an Islamic takeover in the 
West (e.g., Siraj Wahhaj), not advocating terrorism in other places (e.g., 
Yusuf al-Qaradawi), not volunteering oneself for suicide terrorism 
elsewhere (e.g., Azzam Tamimi), nor covertly advocating terrorism in the 
West (e.g., Tariq Ramadan). It's a dismayingly simple, superficial 
criterion.



I have a conclusion of my own:

It is a historical fact that "Moderate Muslims", when they control a 
political entity, discriminate against non-Muslims. Wishing the World were 
different does not change this, playing silly word games with the word 
"moderate" does not change this either. Islam itself is "extremist"; that 
is, violent and discriminatory. It is time we start looking at reality 
without the ideological blinders. Our freedom is at stake.
