Soft drinks withdrawn as cancer chemical tops limit

SHAN ROSS

SUPERMARKETS have been ordered to withdraw soft drinks from their shelves
after a number of the popular products were contaminated by a potentially
cancer-causing chemical.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) ordered the products to be withdrawn after
finding levels of benzene at nearly treble the guideline limits in a Co-op
own-brand drink. Three other soft drinks on sale throughout the UK also
contained levels of the chemical exceeding World Health Organisation
guidelines.

The Co-op has withdrawn more than 45,000 bottles of its one-litre
low-calorie bitter lemon drink from its 3,000 outlets in the UK, including
500 in Scotland.

Professor Hugh Pennington, a leading microbiologists, said people should
not be alarmed - but said he supported FSA calls for soft drinks to be
manufactured without any detectable traces of benzene, which the FSA says
can cause cancer in humans. Its presence in some soft drinks is due to the
interaction between the preservative sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid
(vitamin C).

The traces emerged during a survey of 150 soft drinks on sale in the UK.
Dr Andrew Wadge, FSA director of food safety, said the vast majority of
soft drinks tested were not a cause for concern, but added: "We are
concerned about the levels in four drinks and have asked manufacturers to
remove the affected batches from sale.

"But the levels of benzene reported in this survey will only make a
negligible impact on people's overall exposure - any additional risk is
likely to be minimal."

The other drinks are: 330ml Popstar-branded still, sugar-free lemon and
lime drink; Morrisons own-brand two-litre, no-added-sugar pineapple and
grapefruit crush, and Hyberry one-litre high-juice, no-added-sugar,
blackcurrant squash.
