Ethan: > Now we all know Lacny is not going to go whup > Nader's ass That much is certain. Sam Friedman has nothing to fear. As a Marxist, my crabby/curmudgeonly disdain for juvenile, individualistic acting-out extends to political assassination. Not everyone shares these scruples, however, which is why what I said about Nader needing Secret Service protection is at best a half-joke mixed with hefty portions of sound practical advice. > For one thing, we know Ralph could take him out > with one power-packed blow I'm not sure about this one. Nader is a good deal taller than I am, but he's also lean. The determining factor would be whether my heftier bulk would amount to an asset or a handicap. I once had dinner sitting next to the man, and through most of it he conversed with a liberal lawyer who was sitting across the table from me. (This was after his 1996 run, when I had supported him wholeheartedly -- not coincidentally, I had yet to do any kind of organizing in my life -- and well before his 2000 run, when my attitude toward him was lukewarm to say the least, and by which time I had done some organizing.) The lawyer said that Nader had inspired him twenty-five years before in giving the commencement speech at the lawyer's University of Michigan law school graduation. Nader responded by saying, "Yes, and so-and-so from the audience stood up and asked a question about such-and-such," except that the so-and-so and the such-and-such were precise names and details. Considering that this was coming from a man who no doubt gives hundreds of speeches a year, and was about an obscure event decades before, his picture-perfect memory was astounding, even a little disconcerting. Nader's greatest asset is his intellect, above all. Later in the meal he broke a tooth on an especially dense dinner roll. But that is neither here nor there. I suppose it's too much to expect people on this list to appreciate my jokes when they're sour, morbid, and even a little tasteless. But the subject is not a lighthearted one. People's lives and well-being are at stake. - - - - - John Lacny People of the US, unite and defeat the Bush regime and all its running dogs!
