Subject: Indians and poetry at the Needle Exchange Convention in Albuquerque NM

There is a strong Indian presence here at the Needle Exchange Convention. This
includes people from Albuquerque (where there is also a very large gathering of
Indians of different tribes a few miles away this week) and Montana. Not near
where you live, tho, Hunter.

At the conference banquet every year, I read poetry. This year, I included
some of my poems on post-9/11 themes. They combined the personal and the
political, and are pretty hard-hitting politically. Some folks seemed a little
put out, but about a third of the audience gave a standing ovation at the end.
I was personally very moved, of course; but I also think that it is a very good
sign about the way some convergence is occurring among formerly disparate
movements.

(I can send the 4 poems [AIDS, from then 'til now; Instant Connection; There is
No Nation; and Holy NASEC) to any of you who want me to)

best to all,
sam
