Nope, nothing of the sort.  I just established a fact, an objective 
fact.  What you say is needed is needed, but those are tasks, and I 
was just characterizing the situation.  As to Chirac taking up some 
of the points from Le Pen: he had been doing that for the last 8 
years. He will continue to do that depending of how much Le Pen 
resonates with the electorate.  If Le Pen, as many expects, does not 
do any better than now (17-20%), Chirac will have to turn to more 
Liberal phraseology to attract left, liberal and conservative voters 
who are not fascist. We'll see where he goes in a few days.

As to left unity, should have happened before the elections. It 
strikes me - I read most of the left newspapers from France - that 
not a single left group in France, or for that matter in Europe 
warned against Le Pen and explained the polarization process.  I only 
read about it in a left newspaper ... in the US!

Polarization has two sides to it, for now the upper hand is in the 
hands of imperialism, but it is getting better, that was my point.  
There still grave dangers, but still does not change the fact that it 
is better than the weeks following 9/11.  

And yes, we need an alternative to take advantage of this new 
situation, otherwise we will all go to hell (that is polarization).  
For that, we need a new left.
