Because I have sent a written message, I will be brief. As all of you know, I have rejected, time and again, every attempt by the government of the United States to criminalize our legitimate right to struggle for our independence by the recognized avenues afforded us by our high moral standards, history and international law. I have repeatedly denounced colonialism and a conditional freedom and consistent with this I have also rejected the conditional freedom that the United States government has sought to impose upon me in the same manner in which I reject the conditional freedom under which our Puerto Rican homeland suffers. On May 9th two-thirds of my sentence will be done. According to the laws of the empire my release is mandatory. Because I continue to reject any type of conditions for this supposed freedom, the government of the United States will hold me until May 20th with the purpose of having me report to the Federal Building in Puerto Rico. I completely reject that condition. I invite you to join me in front of the Federal Building (in Puerto Rico) on May 22nd at noon, not to sign for my freedom, but to reaffirm our freedom and our Puertoricanness. Compatriots: The independence of our homeland will not be a gift that is granted to us by the Congress of the United States: The independence of our homeland must be taken, we must win it. Empires are not deities, they are structures lead by men and women. They are omnipotent while there exist men and women that because of ignorance, opportunism or cowardice, surrender their souls and are indifferent to its injustices and harm. Don Pedro said: "We do not have the arms to deal a blow to their naval forces, but we have the moral force to deal a blow to their reputation in the eyes of the world." Many constantly repeat these words, but they are not empty words. In this concept lies the key to our independence. We who believe in the independence of our country, who grasp the urgency of becoming a free and sovereign nation have to bury defeatism and develop the aunthentic support of the majority. We can not content ourselves with exercising some influences or to establish some goals. Even less should we find satisfaciton in the electoral carnival that takes place every four years - suicidal faith in elections and our participatory collaboration in them - have robbed our people of the natural tendency to be free. The present conditions favor us and call for us to become a minority for change; a minority is a force for transformation. A minority will be an authentic support of the majority. The Sovereignty, dignity and liberty of our people cannot be conditioned by fear, by myopic interests, opportunism or ignorance, even if it comes from the majority. The banners of freedom, sovereignty and dignity of the people have never first been championed by the broad masses. It has always been a minority that through its example of persistance, love, sacrifice and courage, has brought the masses to embrace these ideals. Independentistas, are not a majority but we are the legitimate representatives of the freedom and dignity of our homeland. More than a duty we have to ourselves, it is our responsibility to the men and women who have given their lives or have dedicated them to this sacred ideal. More so, it is our responsibility to future generations and to humanity itself. To struggle for independence is to struggle for the highest universal values of justice, dignity, sovereignty and liberty. And while there exists even one colony in the world, these values will be contested. Humanity has paid a very dear price for these and will can not and will not betray them. Let us remember our compatriots! " We do not have the arms to deal a blow to the naval forces, but we have the moral force to deal a blow to their reputation in the eyes of the world." This is their achilles heal. This is our challenge. Thank you all. Antonio Camacho Negron #03587-069 P.O.
