[L-I] 2 Press Releases from the PFLP: msg#00059politics.leninism.international
PFLP Press Releases 4 June 2002 Press Release Commenting on the decision of the leadership of the Palestine Authority to continue detaining Comrade Ahmad Saadat, the General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, on its latest act of submission to Israeli dictates, and on its non-implementation of the order of the Palestinian Supreme Court immediately to release Comrade Ahmad Saadat, the General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a responsible source in the Popular Front stated the following: 1. The decision of the leadership of the Palestine Authority not to release immediately Comrade Saadat constitutes a new act of submission to Israeli dictates and pressures. It makes the freedom of Saadat, and of his comrades and brothers who are being held as prisoners in the Authority's prisons, dependent upon an Israeli decision. 2. The Palestine Authority and its agencies have failed to protect the people, their institutions, and fighters, including the headquarters of President Arafat. The Authority therefore has no right to use as an excuse the need to keep Comrade Saadat and other militants in prison for their protection. The imprisonment of the militants, and in the first place of Saadat, is not the appropriate way to protect them from the violence of the occupation. Protecting them means to set them free, for they and their people are the guarantors of their self-defense. 3. Throwing aside the order of the supreme court to free Saadat immediately indicates the Authority's lack of seriousness about carrying out the needed reforms and its lack of respect for the rule of law, for the highest legal body represented by the Supreme Court of Justice, and for human rights. 4. We call on the leadership of the Palestine Authority to review its decision and to release immediately Comrade Saadat and all the political prisoners and those being held for resisting the occupation. They are better able to defend their persons than are the British and American soldiers. 5. We call on all the forces and organizations that believe in democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and the right of our people to resist the occupation and to live in freedom, to move to force the leadership of the Palestine Authority to implement the order of the Palestinian Supreme Court of Justice that calls for the release of Saadat, and not allow it to drive a big nail into the coffin of reform and democracy. We must reject the Israeli and American pressures aimed at imposing a police state upon our people in service of American and Israeli interests. Press Office Palestine 4 June 2002. **** 3 June 2002 Press Release Ramallah: The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine has issued a declaration in which it hailed the order of the Palestinian Supreme Court of Justice for the immediate release of Comrade Ahmad Saadat, the General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The declaration stressed that the court ruling, 1. Places President Arafat and the Palestine Authority before a clear and obvious legal obligation which they must enforce, 2. Places the Palestine Authority before a test of the credibility of its decision to ratify the law on the independence of the courts. 3. Places particular responsibility upon all Palestinian forces, institutions, and political and popular bodies to act to implement this court order. 4. The immediate release of Comrade Ahmad Saadat and action to that end constitute a test for all those who call for the rule of law, democracy, human rights, and reform, regardless whether they are Palestinians, Arabs, or people from around the world. 5. The Popular Front affirms that it will end the suspension of its participation in meetings of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization as soon as the Palestine Authority carries out the court order. 6. The Popular Front demands that Palestine Authority respect the court order, and respect its own signature on the Authority's law on the courts; and that it immediately release the Front's General Secretary. This is a matter that constitutes a real test of the intention to bring about reform and change in the Palestine Authority. The Popular Front also called on all Palestinian forces and personalities to work for the implementation of these rulings.
