Dear Ms Roche,

Following the suicide of a 49 year old Lithuanian man in Harmondsworth detention centre on Monday 24th January 2000. We call on you to end the arbitrary practice of detention for asylum seekers. As this case clearly demonstrates, those fleeing persecution in their country of origin are often severely traumatised by their experiences. They need to be treated sensitively and humanely. However, the current procedures for their reception and treatment in this country are anything but sensitive and humane. The use of detention is extremely stressful for those involved and cannot be justified in the circumstances.
Even those who are not detained now face the prospect of being sent to other areas of the country where they may be isolated from community support, especially support from their own ethnic communities. The move to a voucher system will also further erode their self esteem and add to their feelings of rejection. The prospects for those seeking refuge in this country are bleak and the planned expansion of the detention system, at Oakington, Feltham and elsewhere, is a retrograde step which will further abuse some of the most vulnerable.
We urge you to scrap the current arrangements and to introduce a system which recognises the very real needs of those seeking refuge and protection and which matches the spirit of the Convention on Human Rights.
Yours Sincerely
