Hmm...
I am coding php since 8 years and I didnt know this function for now.
I think there are several others around which didn't know this.

Anyway...

I dont think that
version_compare(Zend::VERSION, "0.7");
is more readable than
Zend::checkVersion("0.8"); // returns -1
which can call version_compare to be not proprietary.
