Re: Semi-OT: telecommuting & web development: msg#00227php.tcphp
WARNING, there is one problem with telecommuting or rather: The ability to work anywhere, anytime leads to working everywhere, all the time. When one of my project managers started to label me as 'resource available' every single day of the week I realized that the great impression I made on the earlier deliverable (working holidays etc to get it done) was now taken granted. I was a 24/7 resource. I have telecommuted off an on since 1989. It is great, good employers know they have to allow for it in order to get great employees. Twice I have been offered good jobs, when confronted with 8-4:30 M-F I simply told them to hire someone less qualified. I will say however, some don't want to telecommute. They leave at 4:00 and they leave part of their brain on their desk. They don't even think about work until they return. There are advantages to living outside your job. I can't do it, but I see the advantages. For me it is more of where I can escape to. Kids are home during the summer now. My house is like the ending of the Mel Brooks movie 'Blazing Saddles' with giant fight scenes crashing through other sets on the movie lot. I try to go to one of my other offices before those start. When you get busy when hide out where it is quiet and you can get work done. When you slow done and fear you might go hungry, you pop into radar range again until your mouth is full. --Dan Atkins My tip for the day: When creating flag variables consider atarting at 1 and doubling at each increment. For instance, lets say I wanted to report on which of my three kids went to the pool. Instead of creating three columns of data I will create one. Oldest gets a 1, Middle Child a 2, and Youngest a 4. If the two oldest go, that is 1+2 =3, If the two youngest go 2+4 =6. A 5 would tell me that 1 and 4 went, 7 means 1, 2, & 4 went. If I had a fourth child they would get a 8, the 5th a 16, and the 7th a 32. Gets more confusing but you save more space. I would not do it to keep track of 25 students in a classroom, but it has it's places. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: talk-unsubscribe-4zcLI8jJc/rYtjvyW6yDsg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Please read and follow the list guidelines: http://www.tcphp.org/mailing_list/guidelines The tcphp.org mailing list is sponsored by pajunas interactive, inc. |
