Re: Semi-OT: telecommuting & web development: msg#00224php.tcphp
I telecommute 4 days a week, and have been doing so for over 6 years. My employer's corporate offices are located in Minnetonka and I live in Minneapolis, so it's not quite as remote, but e-mail, telephone and IRC with the once a week in-person seem to do the job. I think telecommuting is great for doing actual implementation. I reserve one day a week for that purpose so I can write code with fewer interruptions. However, I've found that telecommuting while working with a team of people can be a barrier to project completion, simply because it limits communication between team members. When I'm in the office I can simply turn around or walk a few steps to the people I need to talk to, grab other people for an ad hoc discussion, use a whiteboard, etc. I've heard of management-level people telecommuting, but the people that do that and are successful generally also spend 25% of their time on-site, usually traveling in to the office one week a month or two weeks every other month to communicate. -Bob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: talk-unsubscribe-4zcLI8jJc/rYtjvyW6yDsg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Please read and follow the list guidelines: http://www.tcphp.org/mailing_list/guidelines The tcphp.org mailing list is sponsored by pajunas interactive, inc. |
