Subject: Re: Semi-OT: telecommuting & web development

I telecommute 4 days a week, and have been doing so for over 6 years. My employer's corporate offices are located in Minnetonka and I live in Minneapolis, so it's not quite as remote, but e-mail, telephone and IRC with the once a week in-person seem to do the job.

As for discipline -- my problem is not working, rather than getting started. With work problems and opportunities just waiting for me all the time in my home office, it's hard to not spend all day, every day there. Every software job I've had over my career always had far more work to get done than could ever be finished. The end result of any efforts were and are always a compromise between time to market and time to do the work.

I have been "telecommuting" for a company in Texas for more than 3 years.
The arrangement has worked out quite well for me and the company. With
things like Vonage and broadband access I typically only make one or two
trips a year to Texas for work. I actually get more done being away because
there are fewer interruptions. The key is being disciplined enough to get
the job done at home. Many people are not.

Applicants must be located in the Twin Cities area.

Why? Do companies down there (the cities) actually think they will get
better results if they hire someone less than X miles from their shop?
How many of you telecommute in your job (especially if you do web
development)?

I've always thought that web development was the perfect business to do
from afar. Sure, you may need to meet sometimes in person, but most
things can be done through other means.

Is this "need to be local" thing specific to the cities area, or do you
find this to be true across the US/World?
