I would hang on to php4 with Gentoo for awhile longer. Right now, if
you try to upgrade, you will have some work cut out for you. The
Apache Herd has changed how Gentoo lays out the config files, so you
will have to do some updateing. There is also a new package that is
supposed to be a default htdocs with a index.html page that will wipe
out one you may have that is installed with Apache. You will have to
allow for several packages from test, and mod_php is hard masked. I
tried to document my process here.

I do have it working on a dev server, but not tested well.
