I had a similar problem! But my proxy allows to use the "pear" command and
download, install, upgrade anything I need, in case I do authenticate
myself to the proxy!

use "pear config-set"!

Set the http_proxy variable to your proxy with the follwing syntax:

http://user:passwd@xxxxxxxx:8080
