Metabase does not provide any built-in encryption. What it provides is a
data streaming interface for storing and retrieving data from LOB
fields. With that interface you can hook component classes and form a
sort of a data pipe that can be used for things like encrypting or
compresssing data.

AFAIK, Metabase/pear::DB merger is not meant to happen, because Tomas is
still stalling the process and the rest of the PEAR people is pretending
that the issue does not exist (you may notice that by the absence of
responses to your message).

It is too bad that for the benefit of of the PHP community PEAR people
are not allowing the merger to happen because that would help PEAR-DB to
recover from the huge delay that reflects on the missing features that
Metabase could provide.

If you want to rely on something real that provides that and other
features, you'd better stick to Metabase as it is.
