[PHP-INSTALL] need help with PHP and gd2 library

Maybe this is a basic question but, I am new to php and am confused if php
should always be integrated with apache or any web server.

I have Linux with apache 2.0 and php4.2.2 installed but, with no gd2
library.

As, I need gd2 library to display images, Is it beeter to install latest
version :php 4.3.9
OR include gd2 library with existing php4.2.2?

If I install php4.3.9 should it be integrated with apache always? because
the present php4.2.2 is not integrated with apache webserver.
