the "remember me" option

It seems gone in the last versions. I'd like to be able to set the site so 
that the session expires as the browser closes for the users choosing so and 
log them in automatically without an expiration date for those choosing so 
as well.
This is possible or not in the current version? Why such important and 
intuitive feature has been removed?
