hhhm, it is selfdocumenting, see the code :-)

no, there is a very good "book" on drupal.org about drupal. by no means simple. 
take a look at: http://drupal.org/handbook

drupal might be considered a framework but is by no means an OS. so any OS that 
supports PHP will do (Linux, Windows, *nixes etc)

freebsd will do. 
You might want to re-read the drupal.org site cause all these question are 
answered in detail overthere.
