maintaining links to files

Hi, I'm sure this is a problem that has been addressed.  But i'll ask away --

I'm using upload.module to maintain some files like forms or documents that can
be downloaded. After one uploads a file you are given a piece of code that can
be used with a node.  Once those links are in the node, how do i track those
links so when the filename changes the link is updated? Any advice or hints?
