It is as Gordon described. In the .theme file for your theme, find the
_node function and, using a static variable, keep track of the date. If
the date changes, output the date.

not quite, you need to edit the node.tpl.php file in the simple
directory and make the modifications. I am not too sure how the template
is done, so you will most likely need to create a global variable to
store the previous date.

Ahh. I'm using chameleon.theme, so I guess it's different elsewhere.
